Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a WHO declared global pandemic, is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus originated in WUHAN province of China.


AFFECTS ALL POPULATION SEGMENTS

The COVID-19 outbreak affects all segments of the population with higher susceptibility to the elderly, especially those with prior chronic health conditions such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Most of the infected individuals will develop mild-to-moderate illness and recover without hospitalization.

THE INFECTION & SYMPTOMS

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, thus it’s important that one should also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, wearing a mask,or by coughing into a flexed elbow).

On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however it is known to take up to 14 days for symptoms to show.

The best way to prevent and slow the spread Covid-19 is to educate oneself, and adopt some simple general hygiene and prevention precautions.

Currently no specific vaccines or treatments are available for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments.

One can reduce chance of being infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions

  • Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub sanitizers

    Hand hygiene is known to be one of the most effective practises to slow the spread.

    Speaking, coughing or sneezing discharges small liquid droplets from noses or mouths. If infected, these droplets can transmit the virus to someone who is within close proximity.

  • Avoid going to crowded places

  • Governments should encourage the general public to wear a mask if there is a chance of community transmission, and especially where physical distancing cannot be maintained

    Your hands are the most susceptible to transference from infected surfaces. Minimize the need to touch your face, eyes and nose to reduce chances of infection. Wash your hands regularly.

  • Follow good respiratory hygiene by covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Dispose any used tissues immediately and wash your hands

    Infected droplets are the largest cause of infection spread. By following good respiratory hygiene, you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19

  • Stay home if unwell and self-isolate until you recover. Have someone bring you supplies. If you need to leave your house, wear a mask to avoid infecting others
